The 1% VS the 99% in DC’s The Movement and Green Team

Yesterday, in an interview with Big Shiny Robot‘s Bryan Young, DC Comics revealed the concept behind their upcoming paired series: The Movement and Green Team.

MovementGreenTeamPromoThe Movement will be helmed by fan-favorites Gail Simone and Freddie Williams II, while Green Team will feature work by Art Baltazar and Franco.

The two series will explore the divide between those super-humans who feel disenfranchised by their world and those who use their vast wealth to purchase entry into the super-powered arena.

This marks a bold step for DC Comics, which has come under increasing fire from the fan community in recent months, as well as a prominent feather in the cap of Gail Simone, whose unceremonious firing and subsequent re-hiring has driven online communities to the brink of implosion.

In the interview, Simone described her concept for the series:

The Movement is an idea I’ve had for some time. It’s a book about power—who owns it, who uses it, who suffers from its abuse. As we increasingly move to an age where information is currency, you get these situations where a single viral video can cost a previously unassailable corporation billions, or can upset the power balance of entire governments. And because the sources of that information are so dispersed and nameless, it’s nearly impossible to shut it all down.

This is a series we here at Capeless will be watching closely. The Big Two tend to steer well clear of politically charged material, but this series will inevitably draw a great deal of attention, both positive and negative, depending on the reader’s political stance.
