Marvel reveals Young Avengers by Kieron Gillen

Marvel recently confirmed via CBR that a brand new Young Avengers series will be launching in January 2013 by writer Kieron Gillen and artists Jaime McKelvie and Mike Norton. While some fan favorite characters from the Heinberg/Cheung series are set to return, such as Wiccan, Hulkling, and Kate Bishop, there will also be several new additions to the cast. Miss America Chavez, who appeared in the Vengeance mini-series back in 2011, Noh-Varr from Avengers, and Kid Loki from Gillen’s Journey Into Mystery will all be members of the team.

“I’m taking notes from the Avengers mythos and doing them in a completely different way” said Gillen on the series. “The first arc is pretty much Loki puts the Avengers together. And of course Loki did inadvertently put the original Avengers together, so why is he actively trying to put this team together?”

Gillen kept any villains who would be appearing under wraps, but mentions the team interacting with The Runaways and Jean Grey school kids as a distinct possibility.

And yes, that 1st issue variant is by Bryan Lee O’Malley, creator of Scott Pilgrim!
