When Disney purchased Marvel Comics, it was a foregone conclusion that the multimedia giant would leverage the publisher to provide a platform for the development and promotion of new properties beyond its well-known stable of cartoon characters.
Today Marvel and Disney announced the release of a series featuring Figment and Dreamfinder, characters who have been mainstays of the Disneyworld theme park’s Epcot Center since 1983.
The series will be written by Jim Zubkavich (Uncanny Skullkickers), a creator well-known for his penchant for unusual stories with art by Filipe Andrade, who has been on a tear recently with his work in Captain Marvel.
Targeting more books towards all-ages audiences is part of a continuing effort by Marvel to expand their line’s reach beyond the standard 18-35 demographic which makes up the vast majority of the comics-reading pubic. Whether the book will meet with large-scale success is something that will bear further watching, but the publisher deserves to be lauded for the effort they’re expending in developing a new generation of comic book readers.
