Marvel made a ton of announcements at the recently wrapped San Diego Comic Con, most of which surrounded their new “Marvel Legacy” event. Perhaps the most exciting news for longtime fans is the announcement that superstar creative team of writer Mark Waid and Chris Samnee will be taking over Captain America.
“Marvel Legacy” is the publisher’s latest attempt to bring back readers with a classical approach to their characters that promises a return to form, with many concepts returning to their most popular and long-standing iterations. What remains unclear is how this will affect some of the more diverse and reimagined characters with followers of their own.
Waid and Samnee were responsible for two of the most acclaimed runs in recent Marvel history, with their tenures on “Daredevil” and “Black Widow,” respectively, earning universal critical acclaim and massive positive response from readers. With Captain America emerging from a controversial era where Steve Rogers was reimagined as a HYDRA double-agent while Sam Wilson’s time as Cap also featured controversial political subject matter, Marvel is obviously hoping Waid and Samnee’s golden touch will help rehabilitate the character with those readers who drifted away during writer Nick Spencer‘s time.
The new creative team will take over the title with Captain America #695, which spins out of the Marvel Legacy event, and features a lenticular cover by Alex Ross based on the classic 1968 “Iron Man #126” cover by John Romita Jr. and Bob Layton.
Captain America #695 will be released this fall.
