One of comics’ biggest names is returning to a title which she made a fan favorite once before, in hopes that she can recapture the magic.
Today Gail Simone (Batgirl, Red Sonja) announced that she will soon be launching a new Secret Six title from DC Comics, marking a come back to a book she made a huge cult hit.
Simone first took the helm of the title, which featured a ragtag line-up of C-list characters, following 2005’s Infinite Crisis event, where she debuted the team in Villains United. Over the previous three-year run on Secret Six, she managed to make long-dustbinned characters such as Catman, appear as legitimate threats with the DCU. The original line-up featured Catman, Ragdoll, Deadshot, and Scandal, and later added Batman’s back-breaking nemesis Bane.
With the line since relaunched after 2011’s Flashpoint, Simone is attempting to bring fans’ attention back to these seemingly failed character concepts. Having enjoyed a largely successful run on Batgirl in the New 52, the writer seemed highly enthusiastic when she announced the new endeavor, teasing more details at the upcoming Baltimore Comic Con.
One major reveal which Simone didn’t wait on is that, in this iteration, series star Catman will be canonically characterized as bisexual, making him one of very few characters in the revamped DCU universe to live an alternative lifestyle.
Simone’s Secret Six, with art by veteran pencilsmith Dale Eaglesham, is set to debut in comic shops around the country on December 3, 2014.
