Dynamite Entertainment has revealed the creative team for the first ever comic title dedicated to 007’s faithful support staff, Miss Moneypenny. The publisher revealed yesterday that the James Bond: Moneypenny One-Shot will be written by acclaimed writer Jody Houser, the first time a woman has written the Bond universe in the comics medium.
The one-shot sees Moneypenny assigned to a routine protection assignment that soon becomes more than she initially bargained for as she uncovers an assassination plot that may have a connection to a tragic terror attack from Moneypenny’s own past.
Jody Houser got her start in 2006 in the world of webcomics, creating the series Cupcake POW! Since then, she has written “Faith” for Valiant, “Mother Panic” for DC’s Young Animal imprint, “Orphan Black” for IDW, and “Max Ride: Ultimate Flight” and “Agent May” for Marvel. Of her upcoming foray into the world of 007, Houser had this to say, “As someone who came to James Bond late (much to the horror of many of my friends), the idea that I’d get to play in that world is amazing. Writing a character like Moneypenny and exploring what makes her different from the more familiar MI6 operative has been a blast. In this story, we’ll get a look at exactly how she operates and some of the events that made her the woman she is.”
Dynamite has enjoyed success since they took over the James Bond license with the blessing and authorization of Ian Fleming Publications Ltd. They took the step of creating stories based around 007’s supporting cast last year with a miniseries focusing on Bond’s CIA ally Felix Leiter. Now it’s M’s assistant and former field agent Moneypenny’s turn in the spotlight.
“We’re excited to launch James Bond: Moneypenny and bring a fresh, new voice to the Bond universe,” says Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite Entertainment. “We’ve followed Jody’s career and have wanted to work with her for quite a big, and this is the perfect project to work with her on. As the first female writer to tackle the comic book world of Bond, Jody is certain to bring new perspective and a fresh take on the iconic characters, while adding that extra touch of class Jody brings to all her works.”
Featuring art by newcomer Jacob Edgar, James Bond: Moneypenny is scheduled for release by Dynamite Entertainment in August, 2017.
