Diamond Distributors Announces 2014 GEM Award Winners

GEMAWARDWEBDiamond Comic Distributors, the company which controls virtually all distribution for the comic book marketplace, has announced the winners of the 2014 GEM Awards, selected by comic book retailers.

The overall top dog was DC Entertainment, which scored a whopping seven wins – including best Backlist Publisher, Best Original Graphic Novel (Batman: Earth One) and Best Toy Line. Mainstream competitor Marvel Comics came in a close second with five awards – including Top Dollar Comic (Amazing Spider-Man #1) and Comic Book of the Year (Ms. Marvel #1).

In a move which should surprise no one who’s seen the quality of their releases and the schedule on which they release trades, retailers voted independent publisher Image Comics Publisher of the Year for 2014. The Berkely, CA – based publisher also took home honors for Best New Comic Book Series for Kirkman and Azaceta’s Outcast.

Small market publisher BOOM! Studios was recognized as the Comic Book Publisher of the Year for the under 4% market share segment.

Speaking to the press about the GEM Awards, Diamond CEO Steve Geppi said “We established the Gem Awards to give retailers an opportunity to recognize the suppliers, titles, and products that have been instrumental in helping their businesses grow over the past year,” said Diamond President & CEO Steve Geppi. “Our suppliers work diligently to support retailers and the entire industry with top-quality titles and products, and we thank all of the retailers who took time from their busy schedules to vote and acknowledge those efforts.”

Diamond selected the nominees, which were then voted on by comic book retailers around the globe. The full list of winners can be found below.
