DC Rumored To Be Bringing On The Villains

According to Rich Johnston at Bleeding Cool, a number of sources are reporting that DC Comics will be featuring the villains of the DC New 52 in an upcoming arc.

This is not the first time that DC has launched such an initiative, but it is the first time that such an event has occurred in the New 52 universe.  From that perspective, it makes a great deal of sense that such a thing would occur in the DC Universe at this point. Over the last year-and-change since the launch of the New 52, the universe has become increasingly crowded with super hero organizations. We have Justice League, Team 7, The Outlaws, Teen Titans, Justice League: Dark, Stormwatch, and the upcoming Justice League of America.

To put it mildly, the villains of the New 52 are grossly outmatched, and it doesn’t take the genius of a Lex Luthor or The Riddler to make the logical leap that, in order to compete in such an environment, the criminal element has to become more cohesive. This is the same concept of escalation that Jim Gordon mentions to Batman in Batman Begins. When the heroes begin to form teams, it is only a matter of time until the villains begin to do the same.

What will be interesting to observe is how this event differs from previous iterations, given that it is happening at a point in relative continuity that is much earlier in the careers of these respective characters.

  • Been loving the New 52! I was mainly a Marvel guy for years but when DC did this reboot I jumped on board with 10 out of the 52 titles. Plus still buy some Marvel as well. 🙂 [leaves my wallet crying each week] Most of the minor changes to our fav iconic characters in this “universe” have been a plus in my book! Plus it has been stated that DC’s reboot is one of the major reasons for the resurgance of intrest in comic books. It’s only right to bring in the villians in this manner to combat this new emergence of teams. Past incarnations of this villain team-up or grouping have been a lil disappointing. Lets see if they really can make them a force to be reckoned with! ~DW

    • I’d love to see some “dancing partner” changes. For example, I’d love to see Batman squaring off against some of Flash’s rogues gallery, Wonder Woman vs. some of the Batman heavy hitters, and so on. That would really go a long way towards showing how each character has tailored their approaches to combat certain enemies.

  • Yeah Josh agree totally!! They did do that similar approch in DC’s direct to DVD cartoon “JUSTICE LEAGUE DOOM” Where Vandal Savage formed his small group of villains to bring down the JL with info he stole from Batman’s computer. The team couldn’t beat their own villains so they switched it up. Was a great toon. If you haven’t seen it check it out! ~DW
