As many sources had surmised last week when Marvel released their “XX” teaser, the image did indeed represent an upcoming X-book by Brian Wood and Oliver Coipel. As suggested by the teaser image’s XX in front of a DNA strand, X-Men will feature an all-female cast and will star Storm, Rogue, Psylocke, Kitty Pryde, Rachel Grey, and Jubilee.
The news was released via USA Today where Brian Wood stated, “I feel like as far as the X-Men go, the women are the X-Men. Cyclops and Wolverine are big names, but taken as a whole, the women kind of rule the franchise. If you look at the entire world as a whole, it’s the females that really dominate and are the most interesting and cool to look at. When you have a great artist drawing them, they look so amazing and always have.”
Jubilee will be front and center as the main character of the series, though Wood emphasized that he didn’t “want to make it the ‘Jubilee and friends book.’ They’re all A-list characters — I’ve got to make them all shine.” Other than bringing an orphaned child to the X-Men that has a connection to mankind’s survival, the exact extent of Jubilee’s role in the book is currently left undefined.
X-Men is expected to launch in April, just two months after the release of Cullen Bunn’s Fearless Defenders; another all-female superhero group at Marvel. The upcoming Uncanny X-Force relaunch will also be featuring an all-female cast with the exception of Puck, and current series such as Captain Marvel, Red She-Hulk, and Journey into Mystery are all female-driven solo-books to receive critical acclaim. While just about every comic company has come under scrutiny in recent years due to a limited number of strong, female-driven comics, Marvel certainly seems to be taking steps in the right direction with the fairer sex in mind.
