ADVANCE SCOUT: The Wave of the Future

SITUATION:

Advance Scout is back! After a three-week absence, our most poplar feature has returned to spotlight some of the best picks on shelves this week which might be flying under your radar. Read on, comic lovers, and rejoice!

THIS WEEK’S SELECTIONS:

1. “Zero #2”

"Zero #2" Ales Kot, Mateus Santolouco Image Comics $2.99

$2.99

We’ve seen the origin story of this near-future hero, which Ales Kot and his talented team of co-creators managed to pack with equal amounts of pathos and action. Zero has started off as a great spy story, and the promise of more to come with solicits which indicate a possible scintillating riff on Die Hard. Kot has layered the world in science not-quite-fiction, giving it a scary sheen of reality which drives the story home in a big way.

“Zero #2”

Image Comics
$2.99

In a comics market that suffers from a distinct dearth of all-ages titles, Boom’s new Imagine Agents promises a fun-filled cast of characters from the familiar to the absurd and adventures to match. This should be a great book to add to the pile if you’ve got small ones at home, or if you’re just a fan of light-hearted adventure.

$1.00

Charles Soule is one of the “hot, new things” in comics. Coming immediately off of the success of his Superman/Wonder Woman title for DC Comics, the writer leaps back into the independent sphere for a look at what he terms a “thrilling tale of real-world space travel, intrigue, and secret histories.” Focused on a conspiracy to conceal alien construction in the asteroid belt, Letter 44 has everything one could want from a first issue: top-tier creative team, intriguing premise, and an unbeatable price point.

Dark Horse Comics
$3.50

Capeless Crusader’s Jeff Hayes loved the first issue of Mike Mignola’s latest pulpy offering, which he discussed in After Wednesday.

The second issue looks to capitalize on some of the promise created in that first outing. Having lain the ground work for the meat of the story, look for Mignola to ramp up the pace and really get the train moving.

ANALYSIS

There’s a whole lot of science-fiction going on in this week’s picks. From secret agents to super-spies, our picks point the finger at the future in a big way. If you want to steer clear of all the super-villain one-offs and grandiose cosmic tales from the Big Two, these publishers have some great things just a little bit further down the shelf. Go give it a look!
