ADVANCE SCOUT: 5 Books to Look For This Wednesday (1/16/13)

Each week, the Capeless Crew picks out those books that we think are most worthy of your dollars and attention. Without further ado, here are this week’s picks!

saga#9“SAGA #9”
Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples have created an independent comics monster of epic proportions. Universally hailed as one of the best new titles of 2012, they look to continue their success this week as series leads Mark and Alanna find themselves on the run with more than a few familiar faces on their tail.

newavengers#2“NEW AVENGERS #2”
The first issue of Jonathan Hickman’s Illuminati story went a bit heavy on the Black Panther, but if this cover is any indication, he will be expanding the focus as he integrates the core team members. How these “masters of the universe” work with and around each other should be one of the most fascinating aspects of this book.

insurgent#1“INSURGENT #1”
Nanotechnology. Secret societies. Government conspiracies. Civil War.

These are themes that have been sprinkled liberally through independent books and one-shots in the last year, but DC Comics’ effort to launch an ongoing featuring these themes should be interesting to watch.

daredevil#22“DAREDEVIL 22”
As if we needed another reason to be reading Mark Waid’s Daredevil, this week’s issue features the direct follow up to the Superior Spider-Man’s first appearance. The stakes couldn’t be higher as the world’s greatest human lie detector interacts with the Marvel Universes greatest liar!

archer&armstrong#6“ARCHER & ARMSTRONG #6”
Writer Fred Van Lente has been spinning a brilliant yarn through the first five issues. The series has been smart, funny, unexpected, and downright brave. The snappy dynamic between the two leads is worth the price of admission, and their sprawling global journey makes a magnificent backdrop for a series that is already begging to be turned into a buddy film.
