Shortage of Workers in the Manufacturing Industry

The manufacturing industry is essential for the development of goods. Unfortunately, we now have a lack of skilled and semi-skilled labor. We do not have enough people willing to work in manufacturing.
It is not easy to find employees to work in manufacturing, and even when you find them, they cannot stick to the job. Employers need to understand the cause of the shortage and find a way to keep skilled employees in the job. Here are some reasons why there is a shortage of workers in manufacturing:
Very Few People Take the Jobs
Students are taking engineering courses all over the world. You might think that these are the people who will take the manufacturing jobs once they graduate. This is very far from the truth. Most of the students taking engineering courses at the degree level are not willing to work in factory settings.
Most of them end up working in other jobs after graduation. Let’s face it, working in a factory is not a fancy job, and very few people are willing to take the job.
Training Gap
To be able to work in manufacturing, you need to have some basic training. Training in STEM is important to learn how science and technology works. The number of students enrolling for STEM-related courses is still very low, considering the manufacturing industry needs them.
We do not have enough trained human resource to take the job. Most of the manufacturers end up doing in-house training to equip their workers with the basic skills needed to do the job.
Outdated Technology
Many manufacturers are still doing things the old way. Despite the growth of technology, most of the manufacturers prefer to stick to old technology.
Factories that have stuck with the redundant way of operation are likely to face shortages in workers. The modern workers understand the importance of technology, and they are not willing to compromise and work in an environment with old technology.
Safety Concern
We cannot talk about manufacturing without talking about safety. Safety is always a big concern when it comes to manufacturing. It is essential to make sure that you maintain safety standards to avoid accidents in the workplace.
Many people are not willing to take jobs in manufacturing because of the obvious risk of getting injured in the workplace.
