What FAITH Really Means for Comics

Big things are happening in the comic book industry, and what’s happening with Faith is one of the biggest.

For years, comic book readers have taken to their keyboards and con floors for heated debates over the unrealistic body images presented in most mainstream and even independent comic books. Depictions of characters of both genders (though the debate has primarily focused on depictions of women in comics) have been skewed since the industry’s creation towards dimensions and fitness which are all-but unattainable for the vast majority of the mundane human population.

What Valiant Entertainment has accomplished with Faith is nothing short of remarkable, and indicates an incredibly positive trend for the comic book market moving foward.

The first issue of the Faith mini-series, which features a protagonist in Faith Howard whose body is far more akin to the average person on the streets of Everytown, USA, has sold out repeatedly at the distributor level, indicating that readers and retailers are hungry for a super-hero who more closely resembles them and less resembles the contestants on a Mr./Ms. Universe pageant.

Thanks to the tremendous work done by the creative team of Jody Hauser, Francis Portella, and Marguerite Savauge, the mini-series is off to a massive start in terms of sales, something which should help its chances of becoming a regular member of Valiant’s ever-growing catalogue. More than that, it has the potential to alter the way in which mainstream publishers such as DC and Marvel handle their own properties. We have seen Marvel trend towards a more “indie” approach to many of their titles, likely in an attempt to recapture some of the reader dollars which have drifted away from corporate comics in favor of creator-owned properties. Should either of the Big Two decide to to follow in Valiant’s footsteps and chase the type of reader who favors Faith over, say, Elektra, then the industry will be all the healthier for it, and have moved a long way towards correcting one of its longest-standing injustices.
