27-year-old Jessica Gelderman is being treated for gunshot wounds after getting into a near-fatal arguement with Jared M. Gurman, 26, about AMC’s The Walking Dead.
Numerous reports, including this one from Newsday.com, indicate that Gurman and Gelderman had spent Sunday evening debating whether an accident involving the military could lead to the events seen in the The Walking Dead in real life. Gurman argued adamantly that it could happen, and Gelderman believed it could not.
The Long Island couple, who had been together for over three years, decided not to spend the evening together because of the altercation, though the debate continued to escalate via texting.
The next day, Gelderman went to Gurman’s apartment building to try to defuse the argument, where it is alleged that Gurman pulled out a semiautomatic rifle and shot Gelderman in her back with a .22 caliber bullet, piercing her lung and diaphragm and shattering her ribs.
Police report that Gurman then drove the victim to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park and was arrested shortly thereafter.
Gurmen’s attorney, Edward L. Lieberman, entered a not guilty plea at his client’s arraignment on Tuesday at the First District Court in Hempstead. Gurman was arraigned on one count of second-degree attempted murder.
