Titan Comics is one of the premiere publishers of comic books based on licensed properties. Today they announced the latest addition to that lineup: Anno Dracula.
The new series is based on the series of novels from writer Kim Newman, and features artwork from Paul McCaffrey. Anno Dracula marks McCaffrey’s first interior work with Titan. He previous worked with Titan providing cover artwork for the Doctor Who: The Third Doctor series from the publisher.
Newman is an accomplished novelist and short fiction writer, but Anno Dracula serves as his first entry into the comic book world.
Anno Dracula is set in an alternate 19th Century England where, as stated in the press release “the characters of Bram Stoker’s Dracula fail to prevent Count Dracula’s subjugation of Great Britain, creating a world where vampires are living amongst humans and a central part of society.” Newman’s previous work includes four novels featuring the same universe and characters, though it remains to be seen whether the series will directly adapt the novels or feature an original storyline.
The announcement of the series only strengthens the ongoing trend of independent publishers looking outside of established comic book genres and moving into the horror and historical fiction spaces. With its Victorian horror roots obvious from the outset, this series should find a home among readers who are looking for fare which goes beyond capes, cowls, and science fiction.
The first issue of Anno Dracula is set to debut in March of next year, with orders opening with the January issue of Previews from Diamond.

KIM NEWMAN’S ANNO DRACULA COMES TO COMICS!
The award-winning horror series creeps into an all-new series from Titan in 2017
(28 October 2016) – Titan Comics is pleased to announce the upcoming release of an all-new comic series based on the best selling ANNO DRACULA novels, written by creator Kim Newman with art by Paul McCaffrey (The Third Doctor).
The Anno Dracula novels depict an alternate 19th-century history where the characters of Bram Stoker’s Dracula fail to prevent Count Dracula’s subjugation of Great Britain, creating a world where vampires are living amongst humans and a central part of society. The series also features characters including Jack the Ripper, Professor Moriarty and Van Helsing.
Kim Newman is a critic, author and broadcaster. He writes the Anno Dracula series of horror novels, which was first published in 1992. Kim Newman has written four Anno Dracula novels to date, as well as short stories.
Anno Dracula has garnered high praise since its initial release, including from literary superstar Neil Gaiman, who helped to develop the series and called Anno Dracula “compulsory reading,” citing the series as a main source of inspiration for his Hugo award-winning short story, ‘A Study in Emerald’.
Described as “the definitive account of…the self-obsessed undead” by New York Times, the Anno Dracula novels have won numerous awards including the Dracula Society’s Children of the Night Award, the Lord Ruthven Award and the International Horror Guild Award.
Titan Comics’ Anno Dracula hits stores in March 2017, and is available to pre-order from January’s Diamond PREVIEWS catalogue.
