Ever since news broke that the stars of CBS’ Supergirl and CW’s The Flash would be sharing screen time, debate has raged on forums and comment threads as to what the exact nature of the relationship between the two shows would be. A great many fans held out hope that Supergirl would turn out to exist in the same shared universe as The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow, while others saw the title of the crossover episode as a solid hint that Supergirl existed in her own universe, which would be visited by the Flash.
On Tuesday’s episode of The Flash, fans were treated to a veritable smorgasbord of cameos and multiversal teasers as Barry and his traveling companions made their way through an inter-dimensional wormhole to Earth-2. As they passed through, viewers saw glimpses of an alternate Green Arrow, John Wesley Shipp’s Flash, a Legion Flight Ring and, you guessed it, Supergirl.
Pictured as she is here, among other alternate realities, it appears clear that CBS’ Supergirl exists in a universe separate from that of the CW’s “Arrowverse”. While this does limit the production teams’ options in terms of how often she can appear alongside the collection of super-heroes already present on The CW, it doesn’t mean that she can’t. Inter-dimensional travel has long been a staple of DC Comics stories, with some of the most iconic events in the company’s history featuring crossovers of characters from dozens of different realities.
How the eventual crossover works will be intriguing to watch, but its safe to say that it is going to be a rare occurance, something which should make it all the more special for fans when it does happen.
