If you grew up in the 1980s, you probably had your first exposure to anime via Robotech. Also, you’re probably struggling with turning 40. This summer, Titan Comics offers you a distraction from fast-approaching middle age by bringing the beloved property back to American comics with a new ongoing series based on the beloved sci-fi anime that, for many, started it all!
Written by Eisner nominee Brian Wood (“DMZ,” “Northlanders,” “Moon Knight”) with art by Marco Turini (“Squadron Supreme,” “Cyber Force”), the new series is based on the classic anime that debuted in the US in 1985. Robotech was set in a future where the human race struggled to fight off alien invasions with the help of their advance Veritech fighter jets which could transform into a giant mecha form as well.
Robotech remains beloved by American audiences as the gateway for many into the anime genre, and introduced viewers to the tropes of the genre; complicated and long-simmering story arcs, transforming mechas, and apocalyptic space opera. The original 1985 run of the series in the USA was actually a re-edited compilation of three separate series of connected Japanese Anime known as “Macross.”
In their press release, Titan promises that their creative team has “crafted a thrilling new tale that’s perfectly accessible to new fans, as well as providing a deeper layer of twists for old-school protoculture addicts!” Robotech #1 will be released on July 26, 2017.
