Image Comics announced today that the first printing of “Outcast #1” from creators Robert Kirkman and Paul Azaceta has sold out on the distributor level. In addition, the company is reporting that sales on the issue are the highest of any title for the month.
Image will not release exact numbers on unit sales (those will likely have to wait until mid-July, when Diamond releases their monthly report), but sources inside the publisher report that the numbers are in excess of sales for “The Walking Dead #128.” While the numbers for that issue have not yet been released, those same sources report that they were higher than “The Walking Dead #128,” which sold 71,352 copies at the distributor level.
The company was sure to emphasize the difference between high sales on this title, which will be released with a single cover, differ from those of mainstream competition, which feature an ever-increasing number of variant covers.
The success is likely due in part to speculation by collectors, given that the series is the first new title from Kirkman since the creation of The Walking Dead. Mint editions of that series’ first issue sell for around $600 and have gone for as much as $10,000 at auction.
