Mystery Fans Dispatch Ms. Marvel To Stop the Hate

With the new rash of hate speech breaking out across the country in the wake of recent attacks by militant extremists, some unknown comic book fans have taken it upon themselves to fight back, and they’ve recruited Ms. Marvel.

These photos, shot in San Francisco, show the visage of the Pakistani-American Kamala Khan plastered over bus-mounted billboards for the site, which has since been taken down. The ads were sponsored by a group calling themselves The American Freedom Defense Initiative, whose website is packed with videos decrying Islamic extremism and claims of religious persecution against non-Muslims in the United States and abroad.

Kamala Khan, of course, is the comic book industry’s latest poster child for expanded diversity in both character line-ups and approach to storytelling. Created by noted author G. Willow Wilson, Ms. Marvel has struggled against misconceptions about her family’s faith and attempted to make her way in a world which is all too ready to pre-judge her based solely on her faith.

To whomever is behind this brilliant use of comics as counter-propaganda, Capeless Crusader salutes you.
