Marvel Warps New Generation of Up and Coming Artists With Chip Zdarsky’s Variant How-To Covers

Claiming they are champions of up and coming comic creators, Marvel is releasing a “How To Draw Variant Covers” series of….variant covers. In addition to the title being a little on the nose, the series also gets off to the wrong start by having Chip Zdarsky, notorious….well…let’s say artist?…as the driving creative force behind the series.

Readers looking for tips on how to draw their favorite Marvel characters (and Hawkeye) can pick up these variants and benefit from Zdarksy’s months of experience as the most innovative comics creator to ever come from Barrie, Ontario. As a creator, Zdarsky can be blamed for such titles as “Prison Funnies,” “Monster Cops,” and “Royal Rumble.” His reputation skyrocketed after co-creating “Sex Criminals” with Matt Fraction, which earned him an Eisner Award for Best New Series. Investigations are still under way to uncover who Zdarsky slept with to secure the award.

Since then, Zdarsky wrote the first arc for the relaunched “Jughead” series for Archie Comics, as well as “Star-Lord” and “Howard the Duck” for Marvel. He is currently responsible for Marvel’s “Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man.”

Each cover will give artists instructions on how to draw the characters in six easy steps, as well as be accompanied by some helpful “Zdarsky Advice.”  For his part, Zdarsky says, “I don’t really know how to draw so this whole thing feels quite irresponsible.”

Check below for a look at a few examples of the famed Zdarsky Advice, followed by the full list of the covers in the variant series:
