Over the weekend, Marvel Studios dropped a second, more detailed, more Baby Groot-filled trailer for their upcoming film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. A sequel to their quirky surprise hit, the latest trailer focuses on each of the Guardians in turn, albeit with a definite focus on the franchise’s breakout character, Groot.
The first film, focusing on a cosmic-based team of outlaws who boasted a smallish cult following among comic-book fans, was seen as Marvel Studios’ riskiest endeavour before it opened. However, it garnered rave reviews and proved another massive hit for Marvel, proving that its unconventional mix of space opera, super-heroics, quirky comedy and heart was too endearing to refuse. The film also proved a surprise in how much of a showcase it became for co-writer/director James Gunn, whose off-kilter sensibilities and top-notch comic instincts drove much of what made the first film so successful. This trailer looks like much of the same, though will it be too familiar, or will Gunn be able to parlay the success into something that goes even further? One thing’s for sure, Marvel and Gunn know people loved that Baby Groot at the end of the first film and have definitely doubled down on that. While some fanboys may roll their eyes at the cute little twig kicking butt, it’s important to remember this: Kids. Love. Groot.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 kicks off the summer movie season on May 5, 2017. You’ll be buying the soundtrack album the next day, most likely.
