Marvel Offers Free Month of Marvel Unlimited in CIVIL WAR Promotion

Can comic book movies create comic book readers? Marvel is betting that the answer is yes with their new Marvel Unlimited promotion.

MarvelUnlimited_CIVILWAROne of worrying trends over the last decade is that the huge box office numbers for super heroes at the box office have failed to translate into increased readership for the source material upon which they draw. there are  great many reasons for the print side of the business’ failure to capture a significant portion of audience dollars, but key among them are the price point of monthly comics and the relative inaccessibility of the books themselves. With the demise of the mass market after the industry implosion of the 1990s, readers have been left with only three real options: purchase monthly books from specialty comic book shops, purchase trades through online retailers such as Amazon and InStockTrades, or turn to digital platforms.

Marvel has invested a significant amount of resources in the Marvel Unlimited platform, their in-house answer to platforms like ComiXology. With the early reviews of Captain America: Civil War being extremely positive, Marvel is attempting to capitalize on the increased buzz around their two marquee characters by offering a free month of the Marvel Unlimited service using codes denoting a preference for once side of the conflict or the other.

Whether this will provide a substantial boost to the service is something which will likely never be made known to the public at large, as digital readership and subscriber numbers remain one of the industry’s most tightly-kept secrets.

Is a free month enough to incentivize you to jump on with Marvel Unlimited? Let us know in the comments!
