Hot on the heels of the successful release of season two of Daredevil on Netflix, the streaming video provider and Marvel Studios have released a first look at the upcoming Luke Cage series.
The iconic super-hero first appeared on the critically-acclaimed Jessica Jones series, and is set to debut in his own series on September 30th. The series will star Mike Colter and will be run by veteran producer Cheo Hodari Coker. As with all of the shows in the Netflix-based Defenders line, Luke Cage is shooting on location in Harlem and locations around New York City.
While there is not a lot shown in the trailer, the attitude of the series can be pretty readily gleaned, as Luke is seen taking the best shots a group of gangsters have to offer and simply shrugging them off. What little we do know regarding the plot of Luke Cage is what Marvel TV head honcho Jeph Loeb said in a January interview with IGN, characterizing the series as “a fugitive story about a man who is falsely imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit.”
Some of Luke Cage’s backstory was revealed in Jessica Jones. We met the man who runs a bar in Harlem and is still dealing with the loss of someone incredibly important to him when he encounters Jessica. While it is reasonable to expect that the pilot season of his own show will cover some of that now-familiar territory, the exact nature of the storyline to be explored is still a mystery.
With Chadwick Boseman‘s Black Panther film not set to hit theaters until 2018, Luke Cage marks Marvel Studios’ first property to be led by a character of color, something the studio sorely needs.
