When it comes to comic book legends, there is no greater name than that of Jack “The King” Kirby.
While Stan Lee may have garnered the majority of the credit over the years for Marvel’s catalogue of characters, recent years have seen fandom and scholars begin to acknowledge Kirby’s incredibly contributions. The New York-born creator was responsible for bringing the world Captain America, The Hulk, The Mighty Thor, and countless other Marvel characters. When he finally left the House of Ideas in 1970, he developed his Fourth World line-up, including Darkseid. In the more than eighty years of the industry, no single creator was more prolific than Jack Kirby.
Kirby passed away in 1994, but August 28th will mark what would have been the King’s 99th birthday. In honor of his contributions, Marvel Comics is launching a week-long celebration of Kirby’s life and career with a series of in-house articles exploring Kirby’s most iconic Marvel characters.
