Jeff Lemire Explores “Trillium” For Vertigo

This weekend at NYCC Jeff Lemire, acclaimed writer and artist of Sweet Tooth, announced that he has a new 10-issue limited series called Trillium in the works for Vertigo comics.

Trillium follows two main characters: One, an explorer named William Pike in the year 1921; the other, a botanist named Nika Temesmith in the year 3797. The cover describes the comic book as “the last love story ever told” as the two characters somehow fall in love across time and manage to bring about the universe’s end.

Dccomics.com explains further that Nika is “researching a species of strange plant-based life forms on a remote science station near the outermost rim of colonized space.” And in the past,William is leading “an expedition into the dense jungles of Peru in search of the fabled ‘Lost Temple of The Incas,’ an elusive sanctuary said to have strange healing properties.”

Jeff Lemire will be teaming up with Jose Villarrubia for the project, but will contribute his own artwork as well.

In an interview with Newsarama.com , Lemire said, “I knew I wanted to do a sci-fi book, and I knew I wanted to do a book with a female lead because I hadn’t done that yet. You know, I just kind of combined a bunch of different things I was interested in at the time into a story. It’s a story about exploration. And also, the big thing for me was to do a love story, because I feel like that’s the genre that’s really unexplored in comics. There are only a couple of really great love stories that have been done in comics. And I thought if I had that as my emotional base, then combining it with the science fiction would make it something pretty unique.”

You can expect Jeff Lemire’s Trillium on shelves sometime in 2013.
