Image Goes Inside The Comic Book Industry With PENCIL HEAD

As with any creative endeavor, the comic book industry is full of twists and turns for those on the inside, something Image is hoping readers want to know more about with Pencil Head.

The Berkeley-based independent comic book publisher announced in a press release that the five-issue miniseries from writer/artist Ted McKeever, an Eisner-nominated creator whose career has spanned almost three decades and seen him work with nearly every publisher in the industry, would be coming to shops in January.

In a blog post following the announcement, McKeever described his inspiration for the series thusly:

PENCIL HEAD is my indirect take on the surreal reality that is the comic book industry, where what happens behind the scenes is far more twisted and bizarrely hilarious than anything on the printed page. Populated with an array of oddball artists, twisted writers, and demented editors, we follow Poodwaddle, as he journeys through the whacked-out trials and tribulations of working and sustaining his place in the insanely absurd world of Funnybooks. Filled with all kinds of in-house craziness, and occupational weirdness, PENCIL HEAD is unlike anything I’ve done before.

Oh yeah, and there’s a werewolf demon thing running around in it too.

The series should draw heavy interest from the hardcore comic book fan base, which has a heavy contingent of would-be creators as well as journalists who will look to the book as a critique of the oft-maligned back-room workings of an industry few truly understand.

Is Pencil Head going to be added to your pull list? Let us know in the comments!

[OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE]

ENCIL HEAD SCRAWLS A LOVE LETTER TO THE COMICS INDUSTRY

The new semi-autobiographical series from Ted McKeever hits stores this January

Cartoonist Ted McKeever returns with an all-new love letter to the comic book industry in PENCIL HEAD, set to launch from Image Comics/Shadowline this January.

In PENCIL HEAD McKeever explores the whacked-out world of the comic book industry. Readers journey along as witness to protagonist Poodwaddle’s trials and tribulations of working—and sustaining—his place in the absurd world of comics, where what happens behind the scenes is far more twisted, and bizarrely hilarious, than anything on the printed page.

“As the old saying goes, write what you know. And after working in the comic book field for the last 30 years… Well, that’s exactly what I’m doing in Pencil Head,” said McKeever. “I’ve combined personal industry experiences, along with a more bizarrely esoteric subplot, to create a autobiographical stew of behind-the-scenes happenings, mixed with my usual brand of oddities, and weirdness. Enjoy.”

PENCIL HEAD #1 (Diamond Code NOV150491) will hit comic book stores on Wednesday, January 20th. The final order cutoff deadline for comic book retailers is Monday, December 28th.
