After receiving a whopping 20 Eisner Award nominations, Image Comics shows no signs of slowing down. Today, Image released their solicitations for this coming July, and if their track record is any indication, the summer of 2014 should be a big one for the publisher. Not only is Image rolling out brand new books by Warren Ellis, Rick Remender, and Justin Jordan, but many returning fan favourites are on the docket as well. Here are some of the stand-out books that Capeless Crusader readers should be sure to grab.
Brand New #1s
JULY 30 / 36 PAGES / FC / M / $3.99
“In the far distant future, the sun’s premature expansion has irradiated Earth, sending humanity to the lowest depths of the seas, hidden within radiation-shielded cities, while probes scour the universe for inhabitable worlds to relocate to. After tens of thousands of years, a single probe returns, crashing on Earth’s surface, a now-alien place no human has seen for many millennia.”
Teaming once again with Greg Tocchini, his Uncanny X-Force artist, Rick Remender adds another sure-to-be hit to his Image stable. Its safe to assume that this blending of aquatic/sci-fi fantasy will feature the same long-form story telling that Remender is known for topped off with some exquisite art.
JULY 23 / 32 PAGES / FC / M / $2.99
“You are not dreaming. We are trying to communicate with you. Local reality has been reinstalled. Things have gone wrong. The revision has corrupted. Finding Ethan Crane is your supreme priority. We are speaking to you from the ultimate bunker within the structure of multiversal time. Do not trust Darius Dax. We are all going to die.”
A brief history: Supreme is an egotistical Superman parody created by Rob Liefeld back in 1992. In the early aughts, Alan Moore rebooted the character with permission from Liefeld and essentially scrapped everything that Liefeld had created. Why? Because it’s Alan Moore. Then Erik Larsen took over and returned Supreme back to his early ’90s roots for better or worse. The series was then cancelled and ultimately forgotten about until now.
It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Warren Ellis, but whenever the man behind Planetary announces something, the industry takes notice. Details are very scarce, but be sure to stay tuned as there is no doubt that Supreme: Blue Rose will be generating a lot of buzz over the coming months.
JULY 9 / 32 PAGES / FC / M / $3.50
“Ten years ago, we dug too deep. We unleashed something ancient that couldn’t be controlled. Something that couldn’t be stopped, twisting everything it touched into more of itself. The Spread. Humanity was nearly destroyed before we found a way to slow the Spread to a crawl. Now, deep inside the quarantined zone, one man has found the key to stopping it forever: a baby girl. And if he can save her, he might save the world.”
There may already be a lot of post-apocalyptic tales on the market, but Spread looks to be something different. The premise is being touted as Lone Wolf and Cub meets John Carpenter’s The Thing which is a combo that offers so much potential that its hard to not be excited. If that’s not enough you may even be given a chance to be drawn into the comic! Post the cover image of “Spread #1” with the caption “it’s spreading…” and tag@kstrahm and @Justin_Jordan on Twitter and/or Facebook with the hashtag #itsspreading for f a chance to cameo as an extra character in the book, plus other Spread swag. Winners will be revealed on the day of release: July 9.
