Today at Image Expo, writer Jonathan Hickman announced his latest endeavor, a new series entitled The Black Monday Murders, which he will be co-creating with artist Tomm Coker.
Hickman has wanted to do a magic book for a while, but in this story financial institutions are the houses of magic where increased power is gained through increased wealth.
The Black Monday Murders revolves around a real-world event in 1987 known as Black Monday which helped contribute to the fall of the USSR. The series goes into bank consolidation and how the houses of finance manufactured the collapse itself. The series is obviously based in realism and history, but the magical tinge to it should help sell it beyond the academic financial crowd.
The Black Monday Murders Starts off as a murder mystery involving a Haitian NYPD detective who is a “lapsed magic believer”. He is investigating a link to a large conspiracy which he believes leads back to Black Monday.
Hickman has wanted to do something like this since his debut work on The Nightly News, but found himself incredibly busy with at Marvel and DC as well as his other independent titles. Like The Nightly News, The Black Monday Murders will feature lots of charts and graphs, hearkening back to Hickman’s roots as a corporate graphic designer.
Each issue is around 50 pages, but 30 of those are interior art, which suggests that a large portion of the series will be informational, something which was hugely successful during Hickman’s early career. The individual issues will be will be split between Tomm Coker art and multiple pages in a row of character biographies and graphs
Hickman did say that he has to be careful not to name actual companies he’s “going after”, something which is completely understandable given the subject matter. To avoid litigation, the writer has made up fake companies for the purposes of the story.
The Black Monday Murders is set to launch in Fall 2016.
