Fans of the “classic era” Cartoon Network properties may have just had their dreams become a reality. Earlier today, IDW announced via a press release on their website that they’ve partnered with Cartoon Network Enterprises. The companies plan to produce a variety of comic books based on the network’s large roster of characters sometime in 2013.
While no specific creative teams were mentioned, IDW assured readers they’ll be “teaming up with high-caliber creators” and bringing to the table characters from The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Johnny Bravo, and more.
IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall said, “Many of these Cartoon Network shows have only grown in popularity since they originally aired, and we’re excited to be able to offer new iterations of the characters in comic-book form alongside both our planned reprint material and also some new animated ventures Cartoon Network has planned, too. There’s a wealth of fun properties to play with here, and we’ve already got some unique things in mind for them.”
Just how far these “new iterations” of the characters will diverge from the previous cartoons is unknown. While many of these shows were only ever loosely set in any kind of continuity, some, such as Samurai Jack, were widely beloved for their serialization. At any rate, it will be interesting to see just what direction the creators will be taking them in.
