According to Marvel Comics editor-in-chief, Axel Alonso, Marvel’s next big event, after the Age of Ultron miniseries, will begin on Free Comic Book Day 2013, and the crossover will become clear when Marvel releases the Free Comic Book Day issue’s cover in two weeks.
In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Axel Alonso had this to say, “I can’t tell you too much now, but I can say that in two weeks we’re going to reveal the cover, and suddenly the light bulbs will go off around the CBR message boards. We’ve said how Nova, Thanos Rising, Guardians of the Galaxy and Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers are all shaping the future of the Marvel Universe — this image will very specifically answer the question of ‘How?’ Our FCBD issue features an all-new story that leads into a huge epic later in the year, along with a heavily demanded reprint of a character’s first solo story and a beautiful new cover by one of our top cover artists. This same cover will be on FCBD t-shirts this year so that gives you an idea of the scale and importance of what we’re bringing you this year.”
It’s hard to imagine what this big, cosmic event may be, but the fact that they threw in Hickman’s Avengers when talking about this crossover got me thinking. Hickman’s New Avengers, we’re told, is the other side of the coin, so New Avengers has to somehow be involved in this event if Avengers is, right? Now, in issue #2 of New Avengers, the Illuminati decided that if they cannot figure out how to solve the problem they are facing, they will have to assemble the infinity gauntlet. The problem, however, is that Professor Charles Xavier died without revealing the location of his infinity gem. My guess is this event will be Thanos making a power move to get his hands on the infinity gauntlet or a mad dash for Xavier’s infinity gem.
