Before I keep going, I feel the need to let you know that headline wasn’t a weird The Onion-esque click bait. This is really happening. Acclaimed exploitation-loving director Quentin Tarantino is reportedly set to help “co-plot” a new comic sequel to his latest film, Django Unchained, at Dynamite Entertainment which will feature Django meeting legendary Spanish swashbuckler, Zorro. Not only is Tarantino aboard for the new project, but Dynamite has also enlisted the help of writer Matt Wagner (Mage, Grendel, The Shadow, Zorro) and Reginald Hudlin, the writer of the Eisner Award nominated Django Unchained screenplay adaptation and a producer on the film. Hudlin will be working with Tarantino and Wagner to edit the book.
At first glance the pairing of characters Django and Zorro may seem odd to some, but according to the official press release about the series, Keith Davidsen, Marketing Manager of Dynamite, explained: “Django Unchained captures the same spirit as Zorro—namely, that the bad guys get what’s coming to them. We’re a culture that has thrilled to, and thrived on, the swift and brutal justice of the vigilante. In the deft hands of mind-blowing filmmaker Quentin Tarantino and master storyteller Matt Wagner, the explosive comic book pairing of these two Western icons will surely satisfy the most guilty pleasure.”
The series will not only be co-plotted, but also co-published with DC Entertainment. While there isn’t much more information given about the plot of the series, writer Matt Wagner did state that, “The Wild West in never gonna be the same once these two come to town!”
Django/Zorro is set to hit stands later this year. No specific date is currently available.
