Today Big 2 publisher DC Comics unveiled the first look at their completely redesigned version of their new Power Girl, in a move which is already causing quite a lot of discussion on forums across the internet.
The character description states that with “a genius-level intellect, a bright future and more money than she knows what to do with, at just 16 years of age, Tanya Spears has it all – even superpowers.”
The change in direction from the classic Power Girl, Kara Zor-El or Karen Starr, is sure to draw ire from long-time DC purists. That version of the character starred in the relaunched World’s Finest series alongside Earth-2’s Helena “Huntress” Wayne, but that series never saw the sales success the publisher hoped it would and the pair was eventually replaced by their male counterparts.
The new Power Girl Tanya Spears will apparently owe her newfound abilities and wealth to her predecessor in an origin story which sounds like it borrowed at least a couple of beats from the silver-age origin of Carol “Captain Marvel” Danvers.
The new Power Girl will make her first appearance in February’s Teen Titans #7.
