In the realm of geek television, there are few more potent figures than former Doctor Who star David Tennant.
The British actor, who played the tenth iteration of the beloved science-fiction icon, was already slated to make his return before the eyeballs of comic book lovers everywhere with his role in the forthcoming Jessica Jones series on Netflix, but now news has surfaced that the actor is joining Stephen Yuen (The Walking Dead) and Felicia Day (Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog) on the animated adaptation of of John Layman and Rob Guillory’s Chew.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tennant will join Yuen’s Tony Chu and Day’s Amelia Mintz as Mason Savoy, Chu’s partner and mentor in the story.
Tony Chu is a cop with a secret. A weird secret. Tony Chu is Cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he’s a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn’t mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit, and why. It`s a dirty job, and Tony has to eat terrible things in the name of justice. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the government has figured out Tony Chu`s secret. They have plans for him… whether he likes it or not.
When asked about the casting, series creator John Layman told ComicBookResources “David recorded for ‘Chew’s’ Mason Savoy character yesterday in New York and was phenomenal. He came in with a really strong idea of how he wanted to approach the character and just nailed it from the first line reading. I can’t express how awesome it is to be there in the recording sessions, being there as the words you wrote to be printed on a page are brought to life in an entirely different way. Especially when it’s being done by an actor the caliber of Tennant.”
