Dark Horse Releases Free Comic Book About Earthquake Safety

In order to promote earthquake safety in their home state, Dark Horse Comics (located in Milwaukie, OR) has teamed with the Oregon Office of Emergency Management to release a comic book featuring information on how to handle such natural disasters. According to the Dark Horse website, “Oregon is located in the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a 600 hundred mile earthquake fault stretching from offshore Northern California to Southern British Columbia. Experts predict a large 9.0 or higher earthquake could strike Oregon at any time.” The one-shot comic titled Without Warning follows the story of a young girl living in Oregon state who is attempting to reunite with her family following a devastating Cascadia earthquake. A collaboration between Dark Horse, OOEM, and Cascadia Region Earthquake Group, everyone involved hopes the comic will make disseminating such necessary safety information more palatable to a younger generation. In the announcement about the comic on the Dark Horse website, Geologic Hazards Program Coordinator of the Oregon Office of Emergency Management Althea Rizzo said, “Most public education publications are not interesting to kids. This comic book allows us to reach a new audience not often targeted in preparedness materials.”

Without Warning is currently available via free digital download through their website. Physical copies are available at the Oregon Office of Emergency Management.
