The critically-acclaimed comic developed as a prospective relaunch of Scalphunter, an older DC character. In the end, the creator decided to turn focus to a new story and came up with ‘Scalped’.

‘Scalped’ is described as a gritty crime drama set on a Native America reservation. The main characters deal with life on the modern reservation as they struggle with organized crime, rampant poverty, drug addiction, alcoholism, local politics, and preservation of their cultural heritage.

Previously, WGN America had been rumored to be in the running for Marvel’s Defenders mini-series before Netflix won out. Now, they have set their sights on what appears to be a more attainable property.

WGN America has been working to transform itself from its history of Cubs games, Andy Griffith reruns, and the Bozo Show into a channel for original scripted general entertainment along the lines of a TBS or TNT.

On April 20th, WGN America will premiere “Salem“, a supernatural show about Salem, MA during the witch trials of the 17th Century.

No official statement from WGN America, DC or Vertigo has been released yet about ‘Scalped’.
