We are in the golden age of super-hero television, and it just got a bit shinier.
CBS television announced today that their new Supergirl series will play host to CW’s ratings darling, The Flash, in a crossover episode scheduled to air at the end of March.
In an official release, CBS declared that “Actor Grant Gustin, who plays Barry Allen/The Flash in the CW’s The Flash, will make his way into Nation City alongside Melisa Benoist, who stars as Kara Danvers/Supergirl, on the special Supergirl episode slated for Monday, March 28 at 8/7c on CBS.”
Benoist and Gustin have worked together before, earning their television bona fides as recurring characters on FOX’s Glee. What’s more significant is that the special episode of Supergirl marks the first crossover between DC Entertainment live-action properties airing on separate networks. While CW’s Arrow played host to occult detective John Constantine, the appearance came only after Constantine had been cancelled by host network NBC. The CW and CBS are a unique case when discussing the relationship between television networks, as the CW is a joint venture between Warner Brothers (parent company of DC Entertainment) and CBS.
It will be interesting to see what effect Flash’s appearance on Supergirl has on the CBS show’s ratings, which suffered a series low this week due in part to poor promotion and reruns of shows on either side of it in the programming schedule.
