This month BOOM! Studios is unveiling a brand new horror series based on characters from the 1990 cult classic film Nightbreed. The film, which was both directed and written by horror master Clive Barker and based on his novella, “Cabal,” follows the story of a rebellious young man that stumbles upon a hidden city of mutants and monsters known as Midian where he eventually comes to learn that monsters have been secretly co-existing amongst humans for centuries.
The comic series, which will be titled CLIVE BARKER’S NIGHTBREED, will feature the creative team of writer Marc Andreyko (Manhunter) and artist Piotr Kowalski (Marvel Knights: Hulk) and will center around all new stories featuring popular characters from the original film. While fans of the movie will undoubtedly rejoice, for those who have not seen the film or read the original novella that inspired it, don’t fret! In a press release from last week, Editor-in-Chief of BOOM!, Matt Gagnon, promises the series will offer stories that “…all fans of horror can enjoy.”
CLIVE BARKER’S NIGHTBREED plans to expand the stories of the original characters by exploring both the past lives of the secret society of the Nightbreed and their current battles to co-exist along mankind. For non-optimistic die-hard fans of the film that may have any misgivings, Gagnon would like to assure them they have allies in the creative team of Andreyko and Kowalski stating:
“…Marc Andreyko, in addition to being a gifted storyteller, is a die-hard fan of NIGHTBREED and artist Piotr Kowalski – who some fans will remember from his stellar work on Hulk – is pushing his style to savage new places. We have the makings of a fan-favorite horror series right out of the gate with this one.”
Issue #1 of CLIVE BARKER’S NIGHTBREED hits stand on May 28th with a gorgeous main cover illustrated by Riley Rossmo (CURSE) and two amazingly awesome variant covers by Christopher Mitten (Umbral) and the Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.
