Avatar has arrived.
In the world of comic books, graphic novels are the literary high-water mark in terms of prestige for comic book publishers. Today the New York Times published their latest list of best-selling graphic novels, which featured a surprise entry at the top of the list.
Beating out such titles as Alan Moore’s classic Batman: The Killing Joke and the latest volume of J. Michael Straczynski’s Superman: Earth One, Avatar, The Last Airbender: Rift came in at the top of the list, marking a big moment for independent comic book publisher Dark Horse Comics.
Success in the mainstream hardcover book market tends to lead to improved sales in comic book retail locations, so expect to see Avatar begin to climb the monthly sales rankings as its growing fanbase looks to snap up new stories.
