A Few Details For Daredevil’s 3rd Season

Marvel’s Daredevil show on Netflix has been a hit from day one, which has left virtually no doubt that the studio would produce a third season. There are other priorities for the Marvel/Netflix partnership, such as this fall’s Luke Cage premiere and the coming series Iron Fist and The Defenders. But a third standalone season for Daredevil is still expected, and should be out some time in 2018. We don’t know much about what the plot will entail—that will likely depend to some extent on where The Defenders takes us—but a recent article at Game N Guide did provide two juicy rumors about possible recurring characters.

One is Elektra Natchios. The smart, sexy, borderline sociopathic antihero was one of the most exciting parts of season two. Relatively little-known actress Elodie Yung arguably played the role better than we’d seen it in a cinematic interpretation before, and in the time since the character only seems to have gained more fame. In fact, not so long ago we did a write-up on a newly released Daredevil comic (DAREDEVIL #6) that focused largely on Elektra, perhaps in part due to her newfound popularity. It’s safe to say that the character has never been hotter.

However, that’s not to say Elektra was obscure before. She appeared (played by Jennifer Garner) in a previous Daredevil film as well as her own solo spin-off. Following those films, she also became the subject of a popular slot arcade online. There are actually many such casino-related games you can find on the web that are spiced up by Marvel character inclusion, but this particular one uses symbols and animations to illuminate Elektra’s unique skills and weaponry. The game’s been around for years, supporting the idea that for a relatively minor Marvel hero, Elektra is actually pretty popular.

The end of Daredevil‘s second season saw her in pretty dire straits (evidently dead, in fact), but the thinking is that the mysterious organization The Hand can restore her in one manner or another.

The other character who could return by the sound of things is Kingpin, the season one villain who wasn’t totally done away with. Portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio, Kingpin was something of a scene-stealer in that first season, and actually dominated a lot of the positive critical coverage the season received. The character himself is a mainstay in Marvel comic fiction, primarily opposing Daredevil and Spider-Man, but having run-ins with other heroes as well. And the thinking among some fans is that he could be an ideal head villain for The Defenders to face off against.

That’s where the big question comes in: will D’Onofrio reprise his role for The Defenders, for Daredevil‘s third season, or both? The actor, perhaps best known for a lengthy career on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, has recently expanded his presence in film. After being called the best new villain on TV, he appeared in the widely released Run All Night and Jurassic World, and just recently he played a significant part in The Magnificent Seven. A greater profile as a film actor could make scheduling tricky for D’Onofrio, but the actor has made it fairly clear that he’ll answer the call if Marvel makes it.

In other words, while we don’t know much about Daredevil‘s third season, it’s starting to sound like it will rope in some of the best characters from the first two seasons. That’s a pretty good start for a series that’s going shockingly well so far.
